Let’s dive into the development journey behind “Teller” our Unity game – a project that started with a curiosity around ChatGPT and transformed into an exciting coding adventure.
ChatGPT: Our Storytelling Wizard
At the core of our game is ChatGPT’s API. This wizard-like tech lets us make in-game characters (NPCs) talk in a way that feels real. Think of it as teaching game characters to chat like humans.
As we tinkered more, we realized we could use ChatGPT for more than just chitchat. We decided to have it craft exciting stories and unique adventures for players. This is where things got exciting.
Voice Magic with OpenAI Whisper
We thought, “What if players could use their microphones to talk to the game?” That’s when we found OpenAI’s Whisper. It’s like having a secret translator between your voice and ChatGPT’s brain. You speak, and Whisper turns your words into text, which ChatGPT understands. This makes talking to the game feel like talking to a friend.
Giving Characters a Voice with LMNT
But we wanted more! We added LMNT to the mix. This tech turns the text ChatGPT writes into actual speech. Imagine characters in the game speaking back to you with their own voices, or imagine Morgan Freeman narrating your life story – pretty cool, right?
Adding Pictures with DALL·E
Our ambitions didn’t stop with conversations. We wondered, “Can we create pictures based on what characters say?” Meet DALL·E, an AI artist. Tell it what you want, and it draws pictures for you. These images show up as visual aids in the game, like having your adventures come to life on the screen.
Meet ‘Teller’
Our game, “Teller” stars an ancient librarian and he has a unique job: To create life stories for those seeking a new life. You play as a character looking for a new adventure, giving your name and creature type. “Teller” uses this info to weave a special roleplay story just for you, filled with adventures and tales.
A Book That Lives
Imagine this: The game’s story unfolds like a living book. Words appear as “Teller” speaks, so it’s like reading a book while playing a game. Plus, there are cool pictures generated by DALL·E to keep things visually exciting.
